Peter Murray, founder of Murray Implement Company, came from a distinct agricultural background. Commencing his working life as a dairy hand on a farm in rural Hawera he built up his sound agricultural knowledge, progressing to the workshop, earning an apprenticeship in diesel mechanism and then on to sales of tractors and implements. In the next 24 years Peter worked for many prestigious companies including P & D Duncan and International Harvester Company; in 1975 he took the opportunity to go out on his own.

Murray Implement Company was founded in the backyard of Peter Murray's Innes Road residence in 1975; from here it ran for 18 months, specialising in selling and servicing farm equipment. The business expanded so rapidly alternative premises had to be sought. Peter settled on a site in Ohoka, where he built the building along Mill Road (pictured), that still stands today. From here it operated for eleven and a half years serving the North Canterbury, Central Canterbury and West Coast regions, selling New Duncan Drills, New Fiat Tractors and Taarup Mowers and a wide range of used equipment. With Peter's sons', Anthony, James and Grant employed, the business expanded until it was serving the greater South Island area.
The winter of 1987 saw the opening of Murray Implement Company's current Hornby premise, along Edmonton Road. The business continued to expand, taking on more agencies such as Kuhn, Fiat and Giltrap. In 1993 Peter's oldest son, Anthony, grasped the opportunity to provide the Southland agricultural industry with the same quality services that Murray Implement Company supplied the larger Canterbury and Westland area with.
Year 2000 saw the gain of the Valtra and Same/Deutz Fahr agencies, which have been attained till today. In 2004 Murray Implement Company separated into two specialised companies, enabling the James and Grant, to concentrate on the two divisions – tractors and implements. This strategic move resulted in MTC Tractors being awarded top Valtra dealership in 2004. The many benefits of this included specialised product knowledge, unique after sales service and a more personalised relationships with customers.
MTC Tractor Co is owned and managed by James Murray and his family who are dedicated to serving New Zealand's farming industry with a wide range of tractors and equipment from new and used tractors, combines, construction equipment, attachments and dual wheels with committed parts and service support.
